The sound of light gallops and turning wheels along with the yelling of parents, children, merchants, and so on highlighted the pre-midday liveliness of the denizens of Denvern City.

Two clean and elegant-looking black carriages mounted by four black and properly groomed horses caught the attention of everyone on the streets of Denville.

William sat quietly beside his father, Viscount Maxton …Ive lived with these people for at least 10 years now. This man sitting beside me, Gilde, and Selene are the only family I have left. I never had a father, even when I came to this new world my new father called me a bastard and readily gave me away. I haven even done anything notable in this life but I have already lost the only true family I have in this world. My mother, Mary…

…I never even got the chance to know her well. Now Im stuck with a bunch of misfits. Well, I can say I don fall in that category since Im ”cursed ”. Why am I even contemplating this? I don know, but I now consider the people that have been taking care of me of great importance to me…

…Father, Viscount Walter Maxton is a quiet but calculative man. He never talks about his past and always praises his capabilities loudly, but he always comes to check up on me every night. Even days he returns home late. As for Gilde, she doesn speak at all but during the time I got too into acting like a child it rained one night and I cried and she stayed with me till I slept off. When I woke up she was still there watching over me. They
e both very kind to me and have proven time and time again that they care very much about me…

…Well, as for Selene, she still stares at me sometimes with that hateful gaze but shes loosening up a bit.

”William. ” Viscount Maxton called out with a stern look on his face.

”Yes, father. ”

”Starting today you are going to start attending the public school here in Denvern. ”

William didn even hesitate before he replied, saying, ”I understand, father. ”

Viscount Maxton lightly nodded his head and asked, ”…Are you not going to protest? ”

”Against the public school? Why? I don see any reason to. ”

”Hmm… The public school has poor learning conditions and a lot of children from the poor class. Are you sure you have no issues with going there? ”

William shook his head, ”I sincerely do not have any issues father. I can look at myself above everyone else just because I was fortunate enough to be born as the son of a Viscount. If I should look down on others then I shouldn mind when the children of people of higher ranking in society look down on me. ”

Viscount Maxton placed both of his hands on his walking stick and nodded, ”…I was sending you to this school for just a month to teach you humility but it seems like I am wasting both our time. We are not like royalty that need to maintain a certain image. I will do whatever it takes for you to learn the right values of life so your mother can be proud of the man you will become. Hm, but you are already thinking like a man. I am proud of you. ”

”My mother… how was she? ”

”She was a kind and compassionate lady. She wasn capable of evil. She was the type of mother that will do anything to keep her child safe, even when she knew she was going to die she still protected you with everything she had. ”

”How did… How did she die? ”

Viscount Maxton patted Williams head, ”Im not sure she will want me to tell you that. Just know she loved you dearly. ”

William nodded and continued staring outside the carriage window. Do anything to save someone you love huh…

Viscount Maxton spoke up, ”I also have another reason for sending you there. Make sure to always observe your surroundings. If you see or hear anything suspicious report it to me. ”

William knew not to pry any further because it would be fruitless so he just replied, ”I understand, father. ”

They arrived at Denvern General School at 23rd East Street located in the northeastern part of the city.

The guards at the gate seemed to already know who the esteemed visitor was and allowed the carriages in without asking any questions.

The school was made up of four 3-story buildings arranged in a square shape. The buildings looked a bit run down and the grasses on the fields between the school building and the gate were scarce. In the middle of the two fields that were split apart by the tiled road, there was a simple water fountain but no one knew when last it sprung water.

Viscount Maxton and William got down from the carriage only to be welcomed by a rotund and cooperate-looking man accompanied by two ladies.

The man was fully bearded and wore a monocle. He spoke and extended his hand, ”Good day Sir Viscount. We anticipated your arrival through the letter you sent. It is a pleasure to see you again. ”

”The pleasure is all mine, Headmaster Gideon. ” Viscount Maxton returned the handshake with a calm smile.

Headmaster Gideon went on to introduce the two women beside him as Susanne, the assistant head, and Bethany, a teacher.

He turned to William and said, ”Ah, and I presume this is the young master? ”

William gave a courteous bow and replied, ”It is a pleasure to meet you, Sir Gideon. ”

”Sir Viscount you have a very bright and promising son. I look forward to tutoring you once in a while, hahaha. ”

”It will be my honor. ”

Headmaster Gideon looked at the woman at his left who looked like she was in her 30s and very irritable, ”Miss Bethany, please can you take William here to his class and properly assimilate him in? I have to discuss a few important things here with Viscount Maxton. ”

”Yes sir. ”

Miss Bethany kept her hands behind her back at all times and gave a large space between herself and William when Viscount Maxton was out of sight.

”I hear you have already been given proper education, have you not? ” Miss Bethany said turning her neck slightly to meet Williams gaze. She wore the face of someone that mistakenly stepped on shit by the roadside in a brand new shoe.

”Yes maam, I was home taught. My father brought me here to increase my social intelligence. ” William smiled and answered with respect.

Huh? Whats wrong with this lady? Do I stink? Or does she know Im cursed or something? William thought to himself as he watched her actions closely.

”The Viscount is a nobleman that served as the previous Emperors bodyguard, is he not? Will it not be better for you to go to prestigious schools more common with children of people from high places? ” Miss Bethanys face was so crumpled it looked like she was smelling something bad in the air.

”I don know what to answer to that, maam. ” William said, thinking… After all, Im just 10. Its not like its your business anyway. I couldve answered sarcastically but you
e lucky father always reminds me to never speak about our livelihood with commoners…

”And never call me maam. Call me Miss Bethany. At all times. Hm! ”

Upon getting to the class, the air was filled with screams and shouts of numerous children. Immediately they saw Miss Bethanys shadow nearing the door the area suddenly became silent.

”Hmm! ” Miss Bethany stood in the middle of the class and felt prideful because of how composed the children became upon sensing her arrival.

”Starting today you have a new classmate. ” She added.

William stepped forward, ”Im pleased to meet all of you. My name is William Maxton. ”

”Woah, Maxton? ” The students gasped and murmured among themselves.

”You mean the Viscounts son? ”

”He is a bit handsome too, but too bad he cursed– ”

”Silence! ” Miss Bethany shouted.

”He is the only son of Viscount Maxton. Treat him well. ”

William was given his slate. The slate was used to write and do class work but immediately they were to learn a new thing they erase everything on the slate, expecting children to memorize everything by learning them only once.

William was given a seat at the back of the class. His seatmate went to sit down with another person despite it being inconvenient for him, leaving William alone on his bench. The rest of the students gossiped among themselves and a few shot glares at William.

…What on bloody earth is wrong with everybody? Am I that much of a freak for them to act this way? Till today I still don even know what makes me cursed.

William realized that if he listened closely he could hear what they were whispering to each other.

…Come to think of it, I have never been in a situation like this since I arrived in this world. Maybe on Lunardays but that place is as silent as a graveyard to help keep the sense of serenity at all times. My hearing is too sharp Im surprised. I can even hear what that girl in the front is whispering.
