I knew I had surprised her by just showing up at her doorstep without informing her first, and she was probably wondering how I had gotten to know her address, but I was stunned when she had just hurriedly gone back into her house without even saying anything to me first.

I felt slightly embarrassed, and I really wanted to just leave her house, but I had come this far already and I couldn just leave like that, so, I knocked on her door repeatedly. Even if she wanted to ignore me, she couldn ignore me forever.

A few minutes later, the door opened up and she came outside again, smelling of cheap perfume and looking much more better than she had done before.

”Do you want to break down my door? ” she asked, flashing me a cold glare as she slammed the door behind her.

”No, I just wondered why you went in without warning, and I was trying to get you to come back outside, ” I explained.

”Can you see? I went to freshen up a little. I needed to get properly dressed up since you owe me a long explanation as to what you are doing at my house. How did you even find your way here? Are you a stalker? ” she inquired, sizing me up with her eyes in a suspicious manner.

”Trust me, it is not what you think it is. You left your phone last night and I wanted to give it back to you, ” I said, handing it over to her.

She collected it from me hastily, then kissed the screen enthusiastically. ”Oh, my baby. I thought I had lost you, ” she said.

”That thing is your baby? ” I inquired, looking distastefully at the old cheap China product she referred to as her baby.

”Yes, it is. What? ” she asked, defiantly.

I raised my hands in surrender. ”Nothing. Anyways, I think my job here is done. See you around, ” I told her, and turned around.

”So, you
e going to just leave without explaining how you found out the location of my house? ” she inquired, folding her arms underneath her breasts.

I turned to face her, and that was when my eyes met her cloudy grey, crescent-shaped eyes. They were so beautiful; rare and striking as if they held a number of secrets in them; her arched eyebrows looking down on sweeping eyelashes. She had heart-shaped lips, a Greek nose and a porcelain skin which paired perfectly with her blonde hair which had been tied up in a messy bun, surrounded by curtain bangs.

”Cat got your tongue? ” she asked, jarring me from my thoughts.

”Um… no, that isn it, ” I stuttered.

What was wrong with me? I almost never stuttered, but she had made me stutter. Get a hold of yourself, Zane. She can possibly make you feel this way.

I moistened my lips and looked up at her. ”I was able to get your address since your SIM card had all your information. Thats how I was able to get my driver to come here, ” I explained.

”I see. You may go now, ” she told me, then upon taking her eyes off me, I saw her face tighten into a frown.

”Uh-oh, ” she muttered.

”Whats wrong? ” I asked.

”My landlord is coming. I saw him entering through the gate just now. Please, tell him you didn see me. Ill be inside, ” she stated, and attempted to leave, when I prevented her from doing so by holding her wrist.

”I can do that. I don tell lies, ” I said.

She scoffed. ”Is this supposed to be a joke? You wanted me to lie about being your wife… ”

”That isn a lie. I was going to marry you for real if you had accepted my proposal. I wasn going to lie to my father. The whole marriage would have taken place; it just wouldn have lasted long. Simple, ” I cut in.

”Whatever. Just lie this one time, she said, looking at me with pleading eyes.

”What are you lying about? Don even try to hide. I can see you already, ” I heard a hoarse voice say, and I turned towards the direction where the voice had come from.

I let her go as my eyes took in the sight of the stout man approaching us, who appeared to be in his mid-fifties with a bald head and a grim-looking face.

”I hope you
e happy now, ” she said, with a sneer as she walked towards the man.

”Good morning, Miss McArdle. I am sure you know why I am here, ” he said.

She bowed her head, so that she now stared at her toes. ”Yes, I do. I haven been paid actually, and I wasn expecting you till next week. The truth is… ”

”Thats enough. I am tired of listening to your cock and bull stories all the time. You haven been paying the utility bills for five months now, you owe me half the rent of last month, and this months full rent, and I have been very patient with you. However, that can go on anymore. There are lots of people that I would love to rent this apartment to for a much more higher price, but Im trying to be sympathetic towards you and your situation. If you can continue to pay for my apartment which is actually the cheapest youd find in this area, just pack your things and move out. Ill give you a week to do just that, ” he said to her in a very firm and serious tone.

”A week? I need a month, at least. The truth is that I got fired and got into a huge deal of trouble with some loan sharks and I also… ”

”I don care, Miss McArdle. I have been patient and lenient enough with you. I am not even asking you to pay everything you owe me since you obviously can afford it. I am letting you go scot-free without paying anything. Just move out of my apartment. I certainly wouldn like to meet you here next week Saturday, ” he said.

”Please, I need you to understand me here… I… ” her voice broke off, and I heard her sniffle.

Ordinarily, I would have minded my business, but there was just something about her that made me want to get involved all the time.

”How much is the rent? ” I inquired.

The landlord looked up at me, with an expression that said he was just noticing my presence for the first time.

”It is $1,200 every month, why do you ask? ” he inquired, even as the girl looked at me in surprise, probably wondering what I was up to now.

”And the utility bills shes been owing? ” I asked.

”Altogether, it is $1500. Again, why do you ask? ” he inquired.

I took out my wallet from my back pocket, and opened it, after which I took out some dollar notes from it.

”Here is $3500. I am sure it would cover the cost of her rent for this month, the half payment she owes for last month and the payment of all the utility bills she hasn been paying. A change of $200 will be left, and you can keep that for your patience and leniency, ” I told him.

A broad smile appeared on his lips as he collected the money with both hands, after which he counted it then gave a satisfactory nod when he was sure the money was complete. ”Thank you very much. I will be on my way now, ” he said, and turned around to go when he tripped over a slipper that had been left carelessly on the floor.

She quickly helped him to stand on his own two feet, then after shooting her an appreciative glance, he walked away.

”You just helped someone that was hell bent on chasing you out of your apartment, ” I noted.

”Its not his fault, you know. He needs the money as well, ” she explained.

I faced her. ”You really are something, Miss McArdle, is it? ” I inquired.

She nodded her head, then stretched out her hand to shake hands with me. ”Kahlan McArdle at your service, ” she said.

I shook hands with her. ”I am Zane. Zane Vader, ” I introduced myself.

Her hand slipped away from mine. ”Thanks for helping me out today, and yesterday, as well. I will pay you back, I promise, ” she said.

”What I did for you is nothing. I have millions of dollars to throw around, so, don think of paying me back. Its nothing. Rather, marry me. Youll gain more than what you gained from me today, ” I said to her.

She smiled, exposing her set of sparkling white teeth. ”There you go again. I already told you that I am in a relationship, ” she said.

I sighed, then brought out my complimentary card from my wallet, then handed it over to her, and she accepted it.

”I don like asking for things, and even when I do, I don ask more than once. However, your case just happens to be different, and since I got to meet you again, I am sure we have some kind of fate and boyfriend or not, youd come around soon enough. When that time comes, reach out to me, ” I stated.

”I don believe in fate, Mr Vader. Ill reach out to you when I get the money to pay you back. Goodbye for now, ” she told me, folding the complimentary card neatly without even bothering to take a look at what was written on it, which slightly angered me.

”Bye, ” I told her, then walked away briskly.

She could deny it all she wanted. I already knew that this story of ours that had just begun wasn ending anytime soon.
