Episode 28: A Score to Settle

“Their movements have changed.” thought Ilya, tensely watching the battle.

The sheer violence continued, yet the nature of the battle had changed.
The siblings clashed with each other, almost as if weaving a dance of death as they tried to kill each other.
They stared at each other with the same serious look.

One after another, water spells from Algarde shone in the moonlight.
Yet, Anne-Sophia scattered such radiance; her sword, bursting with her magic power, cut through the night's darkness.

It was as if the light itself danced.
The siblings seemed to dance happily, despite risking their lives for this dance.
The dance is both somehow beautiful yet heartbreakingly sad.

Ilya has been gazing at Anne-Sophia's back for a long time.
She merely looked forward towards Anne-Sophia's back, and Anne-Sophia would've flown away had she not extended her hand.
Anne-Sophia had a back that would easily disappear without someone holding it back.

“…Were you trying to chase me all this time?” (Anise)

Anne-Sophia's cries reached Ilya's ears.
She always said she didn't want to be king.
Ilya knew her intentions.
She also knew that she held a deep love for her brother, Algarde.

But, how much did she really understand? Ilya knew of her recklessness, but the sight of Anne-Sophia seriously facing Algarde, confronting him at the risk of her life; she seemed so far away…

Was this the gap between royalty and nobility? Was it something only royals could communicate to each other, or was it something only a brother and sister could share? Thinking of this made Ilya's heart ache.
Their backs seem so far away now.

“…Euphilia-san, Ryeini-san are…” (Ilya)

“I shouldn't,” thought Ilya.
She shook her head from side to side, shifting her gaze to Euphie and Ryeini, who are focused on healing.

Euphie puts her hands on Ryeini's chest, stacking them on each other, and continues to use her magic, sweating even.
A pale light shines over the wound, but the wound persists.

(It's as Euphilia's magic power was being poured into a bottomless pit…)

So much magic power was being consumed that any ordinary magician would have already run out of magic power.
Treatment was only possible due to Euphilia's outstanding talent.

However, her treatment isn't enough to preserve Ryeini's life, with Ryeini's life spilling out faster than the wound could be healed.
The treatment was not a permanent solution.

Ryeini's breathing was gradually becoming weaker.
Her eyes, closed in agony, opened weakly, her gaze becoming hazy.
(1)

“…Euphie, li…
like…” (Ryeini)

“Ryeini-san, don't speak!” (Euphie)

“…Did you…
hear…?” (Ryeini)

“…What is it?” (Euphie)

Euphie irritably replies to Ryeini's sudden question.

Euphie doesn't want her to waste her energy, but there's a possibility that she's talking in attempt to stay conscious.
In that case, it would be better to call out to her, so Euphie responded with a loud voice.

“…You know…
Algarde-sama, and Anne-Sophia-sama…
are alike…” (Ryeini)

“What do you mean?” (Euphie)

“I was once a commoner…
and, it was hard…
for me to be a noble…
And, I'm sure…
that those two, had it much worse, but unlike me…
they couldn't give…
it up…”

Ryeini uttered her broken thoughts with trembling lips.

Ryeini also heard the exchanges between Anne-Sophia and Algarde.
Upon hearing their words, Ryeini became filled with empathy and emptiness—as well as longing.

“I couldn't…
do anything about myself…
so I gave up…
but those people are different…
so, the only choice they had…
was to scream like they are now…” (Ryeini)

“…They're screaming?” (Euphilia)

“It seems…
to me…
like they're screaming…” (Ryeini)

While continuing to treat Ryeini, Euphie turns her attention back towards the battle between Anne-Sophia and Algarde.

She sees Algarde swinging his arms and casting innumerable water blades, bending them like a whip to ward of Anne-Sophia, versus Anne-Sophia who pushes forward, slashing through every water blade.

They don't speak, merely charging at each other in attempt to defeat each other.
Are they really 'screaming'?

Euphie had a hard time understanding Ryeini's feelings.
Euphie understands they're suffering, but could that scene really be considered 'screaming'? Euphie didn't feel that way.

“…If things become too painful…
you'd want to…
throw up your arms…
and scream…
ranting, raving…
and on the contrary…
you'd be unable to speak…
you wouldn't say anything…
If I were in pain…
I wouldn't…
be able to stand it…
but, I'd endure it…” (Ryeini)

“Ryeini-san…” (Euphie)

“Both of us…
endure too much…
try too hard…
but if we didn't do that…
we'd know…
we'd be in trouble…” (Ryeini)

Tears well up in Ryeini's eyes.
She clenches her fist, using a strength that shouldn't have been possible in her weakened body.

“…That's why…
I'm sorry…! But, please…
there's…” (Ryeini)

“Please? What?” (Euphie)

“Please…
give me some blood…
I'm ready…
and prepared…!” (Ryeini)

It was now that Euphie noticed; the color of Ryeini's crimson irises had darkened.
The unusual color made Euphie gulp.
She wondered if this was nothing more than Ryeini's ongoing transformation into a vampire.

“Is it possible? Your magic stone is…” (Euphie)

“The magic stone is…
just the transformation of a spirit…
Now, I have the power…
that you've poured into me…
I will use this…! To regenerate it!” (Ryeini)

Ryeini repeats, brokenly.
What did she see and understand being on the brink of death? Euphie didn't know.
However, if Ryeini needed blood, Euphie would give it; but, she couldn't let go of her.

“If so, my blood…” (Ilya)

“Ilya…” (Ryeini)

“I will amend for my failures.
Ryeini-san, may I?” (Ilya)

“I'm not a full vampire yet, so don't worry…” (Ryeini)

“I don't care.
Even if you become a vampire, that's fine if it helps the princess.” (Ilya)

“…That's right…
Yes, that's right…
So, Euphilia-sama.” (Ryeini)

“…What?” (Euphie)

“You…
go…
do what you want…
to do!” (Ryeini)

What you want to do.

When Ryeini told her this, Euphie had forgot herself.
She wondered what she wanted to do, now and in the future.
(2)

Ryeini grasped the hand Euphie was using to heal her.
Grasped by her blood-soaked hands, Euphie's hands became stained with Ryeini's blood.
Still, Ryeini lifts Euphie's hand away from her own.

“Everyone…
is too clumsy…
with their feelings…
so, at least be…
honest…!” (Ryeini) (3)

**Cough, Cough** (Ryeini) (4)

“Ryeini-san, I'm beginning.” (Ilya)

“Huh…!?” (Ryeini)

**Cough** (Ryeini)

The moment she coughed, Ryeini's hand was forcibly separated from Euphie's hand, and Ilya grabbed her and held her back, closing her lips with her own.

A bite wound could be seen on her lips, and blood overflowed from the wound onto Ryeini.
Suddenly, Ryeini's eyes rolled and jerked, but Ilya restrained her, preventing her from moving.

With her eyes closed, Ilya kept Ryeini in check.
Every second or two, Ryeini's eyes spasmed, and her eyes widened in pain.
She pushed Ilya away from herself, and pulls herself back up.

“Oh…
oh, oh…!! I want to go!” (Ryeini)

The unpleasant sound of flesh forcibly reconnecting itself echoed out.
The scar on Ryeini's chest disappeared cleanly, and sharp canines were revealed, protruding out of Ryeini's rough, exhaling mouth.

“…Was it a success?” (Ilya)

“I'd like to…
be there, but…
I'm really…
I was…
lying here, like this…
Why Algarde-sama…
you idiot…! I'm coming…
I'm coming…!” (Ryeini)

“If you're this well, then there are likely no problems.” (Ilya)

Ilya wipes her lips, as if nothing had happened, and Euphie resumes her magic.

Even if her wound had healed, Ryeini was still beset with pain.
Her face was contorted in agony, and she continued to writhe in pain.
Ilya held her down while looking back at Euphie.

“Euphilia-san, it's not for me to say.” (Ilya)

“What is it?” (Euphie)

“…Please? I don't have the courage to intervene, and I have no words to share.
Additionally, I cannot leave Ryeini-san under orders from the princess.
Therefore, completing this task is the best I can do for her.” (Ilya) (5)

“…I…” (Euphie)

“Ryeini-san made good on her promise to live.
If she lives, I will do what I have to do…
But, what do you want to do, Euphilia-san?” (Ilya)

When asked by Ilya, Euphie was at a loss.
She lacked the words to answer.

At that moment, she was put on guard by an unpleasant sound.
The sound was inorganic, as if something had shattered.

Euphie turned her gaze towards the battle, where the shattered remains of the Mana Blade flew through the air, wrenched from Anise's hands.

/////

“Ugh…!” (Anise)

He did it! I can't believe he broke my mana blades!

The water blades hovering around Al-kun writhe like whips.
There are four of them, and although they appear to be composed of plain water, their weight is unusual.

Al-kun managed to successfully exploit the mana blade's key weakness, its vulnerability to physical impacts.
However, it was beyond my calculations that he would be able to completely shatter them.

“Ha-ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha! I crushed it!!! Crushed it!!!” (Algarde)

Al-kun laughs at his success.
Wow, I'm so frustrated.
Al-kun, in this short time, managed to completely improve his magical prowess all at once.
No, rather…
He refined what was already there.
He is no longer using magic in the form of spells.

I began using physical magics to augment myself, but doing this is painful for me.
Al-kun's water is heavy; too heavy for me to swat away.
However, my only means of attack are melee based.
If he can block those, I'll be out of cards to play.
(6)

The only thing I have remaining is the mana blade, which I'm still worried is overheated from overdrive.
Accounting for that, there is the possibility that it will shatter immediately with the next attack.
I can no longer use it to fight anymore.

“You're so adept at magic…! If you're so good at it, you should've claimed it as your own!” (Anise)

“If it weren't for Euphilia, it might've been possible!” (Algarde)

…Being compared with me as a royal and Euphie as a mage?

As for me, I'm unsure of where I stand, but there's no one to compare with myself.
(7)

“Not that it makes any difference now that I'm aware of it.” (Algarde)

“I mean…!” (Anise)

“I'll hit you with this!” (Algarde)

I evade the approaching water blade by kicking the ground.
Lacking a way to intercept it, I attempt to dodge and run around Al-kun, but the blade follows me.

“What will you do now that you've lost your magic tools! Show me sister! If you still have a hand! If you can't find away, just give up now!” (Algarde)

“…Ugh, I don't know anymore…” (Anise)

All the magic power in my body becomes concentrated around an imprint in my back.
My body heat steadily increases, and my heart beats wildly, as if I had a second heart.

“—Get up.” (Anise)

Activate your “magic”.
Form an image in your mind; use your magic power to trigger a firing hammer, and pull the trigger with your will.

At that moment, a boiling sensation spreads through my body.
Or, rather than my body boiling, it's my soul being burned to the point of boiling.
An illusion is created by my magic power, and it's expelled from my soul and into my body.

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!” (Anise)

I raise my voice as if to wring it out of my body.
An “voiceless voice” appears in my mind.
The deafening neighing of a horse begins to reverberate into my brain.

If you want to eat, eat all you want.
To the part of me who isn't me.
Devour as much as you want; rampage all you like.
The ringing of the reverberations creates a magic power that can't be contained in a human shell.

–The “Imaginary Dragon Heart”.
This is a technique that evokes the curse engraved on my body through my tattoos and causes the magical power of the “dragon” to flow back to me.

Using my magic power as water, I allow the foreign dragon magic to mix with my human magic.
This wouldn't be possible for normal humans, but the “curse” from the dragon allows my body to accept the magic.

The draconic magic power filling my body is changing it.
Naturally, if human bodies cannot handle draconic magic, they'll change to accept it.
It's inevitable I'll undergo a transformation because that's what I desire.

I am a dragon, a human-shaped dragon.
The process is much like vampiric transformation but also different.
If that is a transformation, this is a mutation.
Therefore, I have to use the dragon's magic power without letting it “adapt” to my body.
Otherwise, the dragon might take over.

“Don't hate me if you die!” (Anise)

My voice rings strangely.
Intoxication besets me, as if I had drunk a bottle of fire wine all at once.
Even so, I hang onto my consciousness.

I kick the ground violently and dive straight towards Al-kun's bosom at a speed not even his water blades can react to.
The sound of the wind and the creaking of my body sounds in my ears.
The sound of my bones, muscles, and soul burning can be heard.

I unleash a blow, turning all that heat into power, a killing blow all by itself.

“Guhhhhh!?” (Algarde)

“Well, let's end this!!” (Anise)

I slammed my fist into Al-kun as hard as I could.
Every time I hit him, I felt things from ourselves shatter.

Still, I couldn't stop.
I crushed, crushed, crushed, and crushed.
Shattered, shattered, shattered, and shattered; my body, my mind, even myself.

Breaking, breaking, breaking, breaking, but still holding on.

(How much longer can I crush!? How many seconds do I have left…!? Before I can't crush any longer…!?)

I can't squeeze out any more magic power.
But, even if my own magic power runs dry, the dragon magic remains in my body.

If I eject it all here, it would all end.
So, I have to decide now.
I can't go easy on him—I can't adjust the power—even if it kills Al-kun.

“This is it! It's over!!!” (Anise)

I grabbed Al-kun with one hand and drew my fist as if it were a bow.
Twisting my body, from my legs to my hips; to my shoulders and to my arms.
As I was about to slam my fist into Al-kun with all my strength, my eyes met his.
“Oh, I can't help it,” I thought.

“Oh, there's nothing I can do,” his face told.
He looked resigned yet relieved.
Oh, I'm going to kill him.
Somehow, my calm thoughts proved the definition of the word.
Al-kun will be crushed and killed by me here

—It won't be the feeling of soft flesh that I hit; rather, it'll be the feeling of hard iron.

Al-kun was blown away by the impact of my punch.
At the same time, someone came between Al-kun and I, flying in the same direction.
They turned and spun midair, before piercing the ground.
They turned out to be someone familiar.

It was Euphie who came between Al-kun and I.
Her Arc-en-ciel cracked as if it had fulfilled its role, breaking in half and falling to the ground.
Euphie got up with her whole body shaking and her limbs on the ground.

“…It's…” (Euphie)

At first it was a small voice.
However, she firmly raised her head and glared at me with tear-stained eyes.

“It's a fight! What are you doing killing each other!? You're both idiots!!! If no one stops, then I'll stop you guys myself!” (Euphie)

“…Eu…
phie…” (Probably Anise?)

She intervened, to catch a blow that would have killed her instantly if it had hit her.
Even Arc-en-ciel shattered from the strike.
The person she protected was her ex-fiancee who despised her, and despite that, she put herself on the line to save his life.

The dragon magic drained from my body, and a sense of fatigue and intense pain struck my body.
I clenched my teeth and forced myself to stand, enduring.

Al-kun, who was blown away, lay motionless, with his body spread out on the ground.
I limped towards him, dragging my feet.

“…I'm so mad at you…” (Anise)

When I called out to him, he turned his gaze from the sky to me.
Blood leaked from the edge of Al-kun's mouth, and though his fingers occasionally twitched, he lacked the strength to stand up.

“…Totally appalling.
I couldn't even get you to put a foot in of seriousness, the person I wanted to beat, and the woman I abandoned ended up saving my life.
It's almost comical.” (Algarde)

“…Would you rather be dead?” (Anise)

Al-kun smiled faintly at my question.
It's as if he were transparent, ready to disappear at any moment.

“–…I've always wished I hadn't been born.” (Algarde)

“–…I see…” (Anise)

The mere act of speaking sent waves of pain throughout my body, but I did not want to stop exchanging words with Al-kun.

“…Al-kun, I don't want to praise you, but I did my best.” (Anise)

“…Ah.” (Algarde)

“It hurts so much…” (Anise)

“I'm hurting too…” (Algarde)

“It hurts…” (Anise)

“It hurts…” (Algarde)

“But I won.
See? I told you so, didn't I?” (Anise)

“…Yeah…” (Algarde)

Algarde crossed his hands as if to cover his eyes.
He bit his teeth, biting down as hard as he could.

“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh—-!!!!!!!!!!!!” (Algarde)

Al-kun's roar echoes through the air, carrying a sound filled with despair.

After all, Al-kun cannot win against me.
He'll never become the winner he wanted to be.

In the same ring, I would never lose.
And I just threw that fact at his face.

He screamed, and screamed, and kept on screaming…
slowly, Al-kun's voice got quieter and quieter.

“…Sister.” (Algarde)

“…What?” (Anise)

“…I'm sorry…!” (Algarde)

“I see.” (Anise)

“It's…
hard.
Not being who you really want to be…” (Algarde)

“I know…” (Anise)

We were never going to be who we really longed to be.

There was nothing we could do about it, and eventually, we became “nobody”.

There were no words between us.
Instead, Euphie walked up to Al-kun and I.

“…Euphie.” (Anise)

I had to say something.
I tried to open my mouth—but a fist flew.
I felt my feet leave the ground with the impact of the fist on my cheek.

I rolled onto the ground next to Al-kun.
To be honest, the moment I was hit, I didn't understand what had happened.
All I could do was blink, my vision black and white.

“…Hey, Euphie, what the–” (Anise)

“…This! This is for the worry you caused me with this fight, and this is for the engagement you broke off without my permission!” (Euphie)

“Guhaa!?” (Algarde)

Oh, Al-kun is getting beaten too!? Euphie grabs Al-kun by the chest and strikes her fist into Al-kun's cheek, knocking him to the ground again.
Euphie stands up and stares down at us while breathing heavily.

“This is what I want to do!” (Euphie) (8)

“And exactly is that…?” (Anise or Algarde?)

“I want a fight! If you want, you can fight me too! If you want to exchange blows, go ahead! You can't find the words without fighting, then do so! Because, I wish I could've done so now, or even before!” (Euphie)

Euphie told us this firmly, though trembling with tears.
I was stunned and suddenly turned towards Al-kun.

Al-kun looked at Euphie in amazement, perhaps even more astonished than I was.
Then, he squinted his eyes as if he had just awaken, and closed them, as if to avert his gaze from Euphie.

“…I might've fought before…
if I knew you were the kind of person to take up arms…” (Algarde)

“…I'm not so sure about that, Al-kun…” (Anise?)

—Ah, it's over, isn't it?

It's over now, our fight.
It was quite a meaningless fight.
My mana blades are broken, and my body is in shreds.
My head hurts when I think about the future.

But, the fight is over.
If I'd been defeated, then…
There was no choice left but to end it.
Thinking about it, I couldn't help but sigh deeply.
